Externally Mounted Low Exposure Specification

PART 1 GENERAL

    1. SECTION INCLUDES
    1. Description
    1. This section describes the materials and installation requirements for surge protective devices (SPD) for the protection of all AC electrical circuits.

PART 2 PRODUCT

    1. SURGE SUPPRESSOR
    1. Surge Suppressor
    1. SPD shall be listed in accordance with UL 1449 Second Edition to include Section 37.3 highest fault current category. SPD shall be UL 1283 listed.
    2. SPD shall provide surge current diversion paths for all modes of protection; L-N, L-G, N-G in WYE systems, and L-L, L-G in DELTA systems.
    3. Each device shall be fused with a surge rated fuse and incorporate a thermal cutout device.
    4. Service entrance SPD shall provide audible diagnostic monitoring by way of audible alarm. This alarm shall activate upon a fault condition. An alarm on/off switch shall be provided to silence the alarm. An alarm push to test switch shall be provided.
    5. A dedicated breaker shall be provided as a means of disconnect for SPD’s.
    6. SPD shall meet or exceed the following criteria:
    1. Minimum surge current capability (single pulse rated) per phase shall be:
    1. Service entrance applications: 160kA per phase
    2. Distribution applications: 50kA per phase

       

      UL 1449 Listed Suppression Voltage Ratings shall not exceed the following:

    1. SPD shall have a minimum EMI/RFI filtering of –50dB at 100kHz with an insertion ratio of 50:1 using MIL-STD-220A methodology.
    2. SPD shall be provided with one set of NO/NC dry contacts.
    3. SPD shall have a warranty for a period of five years, incorporating unlimited replacements of suppressor parts if they are destroyed by transients during the warranty period.

2.02 MANUFACTURERS

    1. Approved Vendors: Advanced Protection Technologies TE/XT/160 for service entrance, and TE/XP for distribution.

2.03 EXECUTION

    1. Service Entrance:
    1. One primary suppressor shall be installed external to the service entrance in accordance with manufacturer instructions.
    2. The SPD shall be installed on the load side.
    3. The SPD ground shall be bonded to the service entrance ground.
    1. Distribution Panelboards:
    1. One suppressor shall be installed external to each designated distribution panelboard.
    2. The surge suppression device shall be installed in accordance with manufacturer instructions.
