Did You Know? TVSS rarely fail from surges. During normal operation, TVSS can last 20-30 years. TVSS’ number one killer is sustained overvoltage conditions. No TVSS can withstand certain sustained overvoltages. In fact, better units are purposely designed to shut themselves off to ensure passive operation at end of life. As a generalization, no TVSS manufacturer warrants against sustained overvoltages as such events are truly outside TVSS’ scope. This might be analogous to automakers not warranting car accidents. Worded differently: larger problems usually cause TVSS failures and TVSS is the first casualty, much like a canary in the coalmine. Common problems are missing N-G bonds, genset regulation issues, reference to ground problems, etc. APT offers forensic analysis at no cost to help professionals diagnose these problems. Sustained overvoltages often leave telltale clues inside the suppressor. This proves invaluable in many instances.
