Surge protectors
guard against transient overvoltages, sometimes
called transients, spikes or surges, hence the
name
Transient Voltage
Surge Suppressor or
TVSS. Transients are known to
damage sensitive electronic equipment in homes,
schools, commercial, industrial and medical
facilities, wastewater treatment plants,
factories, etc. Transient overvoltages
come from lightning and utility operations as
well as internal actions such as motors cycling
on and off. Transients have always been
with us, however modern microelectronic loads
tend to be sensitive to them. The
downtime, damage and destruction caused to
critical or electronic loads cost billions of
dollars a year.
APT’s specialty is
hardwired TVSS that
connects to electrical distribution gear in
single, two pole, and three phase power systems.
Typically, a
TVSS
connects via a breaker and protects the entire
load fed from that panel. Most
TVSS are comprised
of Metal Oxide
Varistors (MOVs) and capacitive EMI/RFI noise
filters.
